TotalEnergies Approves $1.2bn 1GW Wind Farm With 600MWh Battery Storage in Kazakhstan

TTETTE

TotalEnergies has committed $1.2bn to a 1GW onshore wind farm and 600MWh battery system in Kazakhstan under a 25-year power purchase agreement, with 75% external financing secured. The plant is expected to deliver 100 TWh over 25 years and serve about one million residents, reinforcing grid stability.

1. Final Investment Decision and Project Scope

TotalEnergies has approved the final investment decision for the Mirny project, comprising a 1GW onshore wind farm and a 600MWh battery energy storage system in south-east Kazakhstan. The development will serve approximately one million residents under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

2. Technical and Production Details

Mirny will feature 150 wind turbines and is designed to generate 100 TWh of renewable electricity over 25 years. The integrated 600MWh battery provided by TotalEnergies’ affiliate Saft will enhance grid stability by smoothing output variability.

3. Financing and Partnership Structure

The $1.2bn project is funded 75% by an international lending consortium including DBK, DEG, China Construction Bank, EBRD, Proparco, QNB Group, Société Générale and Standard Chartered. TotalEnergies holds a 60% stake, with Samruk Energy and KazMunayGas each owning 20%.

4. Strategic Impact and Future Outlook

This investment aligns with Kazakhstan’s goal to boost renewable electricity to 15% by 2030 and expands TotalEnergies’ renewables portfolio toward a 9GW joint venture with Masdar across Asia. The project underscores the company’s multi-energy strategy in the region since 1993.
