Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has inked an agreement with Agility Robotics to shift its Digit humanoid robots from a one-year pilot to commercial operation under a Robots-as-a-Service model. The contract covers deployment at the automaker’s Canadian assembly facility, marking the first mass integration of humanoid robots in Toyota’s production network.

Under the agreement, multiple Digit units will integrate with existing assembly lines to handle repetitive tasks such as material transport, parts handling and machine tending. The robots’ humanoid form factor and advanced sensors enable them to navigate factory floors and collaborate with human workers without significant retooling.

By adopting a subscription-based automation model, Toyota aims to improve line efficiency, reduce manual labor demands and maintain production flexibility. This commercial rollout could set a precedent for broader use of humanoid robots across the auto industry as manufacturers seek cost-effective ways to boost output.
