Apple Defeats Masimo in ITC Decision, Keeps Redesigned Watch Imports

AAPLAAPL

The U.S. Trade Commission declined to review a March ruling, closing Masimo’s bid to reinstate an import ban on redesigned Apple Watch models avoiding infringing blood-oxygen sensor patents. Apple’s watches display blood-oxygen readings only on paired iPhones and received U.S. Customs approval; Masimo may appeal to the Federal Circuit.

1. ITC Decision Closes Import Ban Bid

In April 2026, the U.S. International Trade Commission declined to review an initial March ruling, effectively halting Masimo’s attempt to reinstate an import ban on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 models. The tribunal confirmed that Apple’s redesign avoids infringing Masimo’s blood-oxygen sensor patents.

2. Apple Watch Redesign and Customs Approval

Following a December 2023 import block, Apple removed on-device blood-oxygen readings and released an updated Watch that displays sensor data exclusively on paired iPhones. U.S. Customs and Border Protection approved the redesign last August, allowing the revised models to return to the U.S. market.

3. Masimo’s Appeal and Legal Actions

Masimo retains the right to appeal the ITC decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and has separately challenged Customs’ approval of the redesigned watches. The company also pursues litigation in California, where it secured a $634 million patent infringement verdict that Apple is appealing.
