Trump ends tariffs on some Canadian products, aiming to help Senator Collins
SPY•Donald Trump signed an order removing 50% tariffs on some Canadian agricultural and forestry products, with exemptions taking effect October 30. The order also added other Canadian goods to the tariff list to offset the relief.
1. Tariff exemptions
The order exempts plywood sheets, some paper products, certain machinery and refrigeration equipment, packing crates and boxes, and fresh and dried seaweed. The changes take effect four days before the November 3 election.
2. Collins sought relief
Senator Susan Collins had urged the White House to address tariffs affecting Maine companies and farmers. She said the relief would aid the state’s blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed producers, which rely on some Canadian equipment and packaging materials.
3. Other products added
Trump added carpets, paints, shampoos, cocoa powder, wooden coffins, ice cream sticks, air-conditioning machines, chest freezers, archery equipment and canoes to the 50% tariff list. Democrat Troy Jackson criticized Collins over her support for Trump’s tariff policies; Collins is seeking reelection in a close race.
