Trump names intelligence chief Clayton as AI czar, to head task force
QQQ•President Donald Trump named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead a new AI task force aimed at maintaining U.S. leadership in the technology. Clayton said the panel has 120 days to assess AI risks and opportunities and recommend the federal government’s role.
1. Clayton to lead task force
Trump said he had named Clayton the administration’s AI czar and tasked him with heading the newly created Super Intelligence Force. The panel will coordinate federal efforts and engage with consumers, religious groups, AI companies and other stakeholders.
2. Report due in 120 days
Clayton said the task force has 120 days to produce a report assessing AI’s risks and opportunities and recommending what role the federal government should play. The panel will review AI incident-reporting mechanisms and federal response capabilities, and recommend ways to strengthen them under existing authorities.
3. Other officials on panel
The task force’s leaders will also include Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. It will report to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
