Trump says Taiwan agrees to buy 30% of LNG from Alaska pipeline project
UNG•Donald Trump said Taiwan agreed to buy 30% of the LNG from an Alaska pipeline project, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Taiwan committed $4.4 billion to its development. The terms were unclear, and it was not clear whether a final deal had been signed.
1. Taiwan commitment
Trump announced the agreement at a rally in Alaska. Lutnick said Taiwan had committed $4.4 billion to pipeline development, while Taiwan’s economy ministry had no immediate comment. Premier Cho Jung-tai said the government’s job was to stabilize the energy supply and build its resilience.
2. Project capacity and deals
If built, the Alaska LNG project could export up to 20 million tons of LNG a year. It has agreements covering 13 million tons annually from buyers in Asia and TotalEnergies, and needs agreements for another 3 million tons that become binding to line up financing. Taiwan state energy firm CPC Corp signed an agreement last year to buy LNG and invest in the project; Alaska’s governor said Taiwan had signed a letter of intent for 6 million metric tons a year.
