Trump says US close to trade deal with Canada, Carney says work remains
SPY•Donald Trump said the United States was close to a trade deal with Canada, while Mark Carney said negotiations had progressed but were not finished. Carney said Washington withdrew some demands, including a demand for final say over Canada’s trade deals with other countries.
1. Negotiations continue
Trump said the United States would make a deal with Canada “very soon” and called it a “great deal.” Carney said the United States had dropped some earlier demands, including one that would have given Washington final say over trade deals Canada might pursue with other countries.
2. Progress but no agreement
“They’re asking less and they’re offering more, but we’re not quite there,” Carney said at a news conference in Antigua. The two countries have imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other in recent months.
