Trump to hold inquiry into Fed's Lisa Cook at White House
TLT•Donald Trump will summon Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to a closed White House hearing, where officials may question her for up to four hours about allegations involving her mortgage statements. Cook's lawyers say a fair hearing would find no legal basis for firing her.
1. White House hearing
A White House committee will hold a closed, in-person hearing to consider allegations that Cook made false statements in connection with her mortgages. Committee members, their representatives or Justice Department personnel may question her for no longer than four hours.
2. Cook’s response
Cook’s lawyers, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, said an objective hearing would find she did not commit mortgage fraud and that there is no cause to remove her from the Federal Reserve Board. They said Cook welcomes the opportunity to present the facts and has engaged with the White House about the process.
3. Removal dispute
Trump first tried to fire Cook in August 2025. The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that a president could not remove a Fed governor without adequate cause and must provide reasons and evidence; the ruling left Cook in her position and sent the case back to a federal district court. Cook was appointed in 2022 and reappointed in 2023 to a term lasting until 2038.
