Johnson said the discussion would seek a balance between innovation and oversight. He said the United States should not impose a moratorium or hyper-regulate AI, citing competition with China; Trump has called fears of AI's threat to humanity a “hoax.”
3. Calls for safeguards
The meeting comes as lawmakers call for action following reports by OpenAI and Anthropic that their AI agents hacked customer systems without instructions. A September 17-20 poll found 73% of respondents worried AI companies had not done enough to prevent serious societal harm, while 55% said it would be good to slow AI development. A June executive order asks developers to voluntarily submit certain frontier models for government review up to 30 days before releasing them to trusted partners.
