Trump to issue directive on diesel after promising 'big announcement'
USO•Three industry sources say Trump will issue a directive in coming days to seek ways to control diesel prices and increase fuel output. The average U.S. diesel price reached $6.28 a gallon on Thursday, AAA said.
1. Directive under consideration
Trump said there would be “big news” on diesel. Three industry sources said he will issue a directive to some department heads in coming days, possibly as a presidential memo, directing officials to find ways to control diesel prices.
2. Production and prices
The sources said the directive would push officials to find ways around local and state regulations blocking energy production and use the Defense Production Act to increase oil and fuel output. Diesel prices have risen 70% since the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran began this year, and averaged $6.28 a gallon on Thursday, AAA said. It is unclear how quickly the directive could lower prices.
