Trump urges supporters to vote by mail despite fraud claims
SPY•Donald Trump encouraged supporters to vote by mail or in person in the November 3 congressional midterms, despite years of claims that mail-in voting is rife with fraud. His approval rating was 32% in a poll completed Monday, and registered voters preferred Democrats over Republicans 44% to 37%.
1. Trump endorses mail voting
Trump told reporters Monday that supporters could vote by mail or in person in the November 3 congressional midterms, though he said he preferred in-person voting. In a campaign video over the weekend, he also urged Republicans to vote early, by mail or on Election Day.
2. Polling and election rules
Trump has repeatedly made false claims that his 2020 defeat resulted from voter fraud, including with mail-in ballots. His administration sought to tighten mail-voting rules, but the Supreme Court in September declined to allow the Postal Service to enforce the new rules. A Reuters/Ipsos poll completed Monday found Trump’s approval rating at 32%; registered voters preferred Democrats over Republicans 44% to 37%, while independents favored Democrats 37% to 21%, with 28% undecided.
