Trump-Xi summit in Washington features fanfare but low expectations

1. Summit focuses on ties
Trump welcomed Xi to the White House for a state summit that featured military ceremony and a private meeting. Trump described their relationship as a “truly great friendship,” while Xi said the countries’ interests were deeply intertwined and called for healthy competition and regular military dialogue.
2. Disputes remain unresolved
A Chinese readout said Xi urged the United States to oppose Taiwan independence. Trump had previously said he was holding in abeyance an arms package for Taiwan worth about $14 billion. The leaders discussed security and artificial intelligence, but there was no sign their meeting produced breakthroughs on those issues.
3. Trade pause extended
Bessent said the two sides agreed to extend until January 10 an agreement pausing their trade war. Further possible discussions included tariff reductions, drug trafficking and military dialogue.
