Johnson said the White House meeting would focus on finding a balance between AI innovation and oversight. He said the United States does not need a moratorium or to “hyper-regulate” the technology, warning that it could lose the race to China.

Johnson said there may be a role for the Department of Justice if things go awry, and called for transparency and some oversight. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Congress had a responsibility to protect the public and should act on AI safety “boldly and responsibly — now.”
3. Industry concerns
The meeting comes as leading AI companies, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI, have called for slowing development of increasingly capable AI systems. Trump had dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday.
