TSX ends near flat for the week as financial shares rally
EWC•Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.3% to 35,800.89 on Friday, while slipping 0.02% for the week. Financial shares gained as Canada’s 10-year yield fell 7.5 basis points to 3.923%.
1. Index and yields
The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 94.43 points on Friday, a day after closing at its lowest level in eight days. The Canadian 10-year yield eased to 3.923% after reaching 4.011% on Thursday, its highest level since October 2023. Preliminary data showed wholesale trade fell 1.5% in August from July.
2. Sector moves
Financials gained 1.1%, with National Bank of Canada shares rising 1.4% after it announced plans to buy back up to 10 million shares. Consumer discretionary stocks added 2.2%, helped by Magna International’s 4.7% gain. Energy fell 0.8% and technology declined 1.1%; BlackBerry shares dropped 5.7%.
