Uber Commits Nearly $500M to Nuro with Milestones for Driverless Testing
UBER•Uber’s total committed funding to Nuro approaches $500 million, including an initial $203 million tranche and roughly $297 million of contingent capital tied to autonomous operation, passenger-test and geographic-expansion benchmarks. Remaining funds unlock as Nuro achieves driverless rides, passenger pickups and expands service footprint by year-end 2026.
1. Investment Structure in Nuro
Uber’s financial support for Nuro now totals nearly $500 million, comprised of a $203 million equity round and additional contingent commitments of about $297 million. The contingent funding is released as Nuro clears key benchmarks: operating without a human driver, launching passenger rides and expanding its service footprint through 2026.
2. Strategic Impact on Uber’s Robotaxi Platform
This capital infusion cements Uber’s role as a robotaxi platform provider without owning all underlying technology. It complements Uber’s partnerships with Rivian for up to 50,000 autonomous R2 electric vehicles, Autobrains and Nvidia in Munich, and existing ties with Waymo, Baidu and Wayve, positioning Uber for commercial autonomy deployments in major markets.
