Uber & WeRide Launch First Abu Dhabi Robotaxi Service, Quadrupling Fleet to 200 Vehicles
Uber and WeRide launched Abu Dhabi's first robotaxi service with safety specialists onboard, leveraging a fleet that quadrupled since December to over 200 vehicles covering 70% of areas. They aim to expand to 1,200 vehicles across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh by 2027, boosting growth potential for ETF ride-sharing holdings.
1. Launch Details
Uber and WeRide have rolled out Abu Dhabi's first commercial robotaxi service in the city center, offering rides via UberX, Uber Comfort or a dedicated autonomous option. A safety specialist rides onboard each vehicle as part of a phased rollout toward fully driverless operations.
2. Service Coverage & Growth
The service area includes key landmarks such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and hotels along the Corniche, covering about 70% of Abu Dhabi’s core zones. The robotaxi fleet has grown fourfold since December 2024, reaching more than 200 vehicles.
3. Expansion Plans
Tawasul Transport manages the current fleet and operations, while Uber and WeRide plan to scale to 1,200 robotaxis across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh by 2027. This regional rollout targets rapid growth toward a fully autonomous mobility network.
4. Implications for ETF
The Invesco Leisure and Entertainment ETF holds significant ride-sharing positions, including Uber, which could see enhanced revenue and valuation from expanded autonomous services. Growth in robotaxi adoption may drive fund performance if deployment milestones are met.
