1. Portfolio diversification findings
Union Bancaire Privée’s analysis found that emerging market debt improved historical portfolio risk-return profiles, raising potential returns without a proportional increase in risk. Frontier blended-currency debt, hard-currency sovereigns and emerging market corporate debt showed particularly notable improvements in a five-year analysis.
2. Local debt ownership
Within pure fixed-income portfolios, emerging market corporate and frontier debt improved historical return potential relative to traditional developed-market bonds. Domestic investors now hold close to 87% of emerging market local debt, reducing dependence on foreign capital during market stress, though the debt remains exposed to global shocks.
