UBP says hyperscalers’ USD 820 billion capex drives rising US investment-grade bond issuance
XLK•Market capacity and cloud-contract risk
UBP said market capacity, not credit quality, is the binding constraint, with hyperscalers and Nvidia already representing 4.6% of the US IG index.
The key risk centers on USD 2.3 trillion of unbilled cloud contracts tied to OpenAI, projected to burn over USD 200 billion by 2029. UBP expects higher pricing for each major deal, while 2027 stress depends on OpenAI and Anthropic payment capacity, with renegotiations seen as more likely than defaults.
Hyperscalers’ capex points to larger funding gap
Union Bancaire Privée flagged a looming funding gap as hyperscalers’ 2026 capex hits USD 820 billion versus USD 750 billion operating cash flow.
Dollar-denominated investment-grade bonds are expected to fund most needs, with issuance pressure already lifting premia as supply grows.
