UK approves long-delayed Jackdaw gas field
EQNR•Britain approved the Jackdaw North Sea gas field, which is expected to start supplying gas by the end of October and could increase domestic production by around 6% at its peak. The government also announced a £2 billion downpayment for a fund to reinvest oil and gas revenues in the climate transition.
1. Gas supply expected soon
Britain approved the Jackdaw North Sea gas field after years of legal and political wrangling. Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said it could start supplying gas to British homes and businesses as early as the end of October, increase domestic gas production by around 6% at its peak and operate for up to 11 years.
2. Fund and reactions
The government will establish a New Energy Wealth Fund with a £2 billion downpayment to reinvest oil and gas revenues in the climate transition. The Unite union welcomed the approval, while the Green Party leader called it “climate vandalism.” Rosebank, an oil field also blocked by a 2025 court ruling, has not yet been approved. Jackdaw is run by Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor.
