UK energy poised for more deals amid high taxes and oil prices
XLE•UK oil and gas mergers and acquisitions involving a UK target or buyer reached $19.6 billion year to date, exceeding the $16.5 billion recorded for all of 2025. Analysts and bankers expect further North Sea consolidation, citing a 78% upstream tax rate, high costs and ageing fields.
1. Deals gain momentum
Tax advantages and high energy prices are expected to drive further consolidation in Britain's North Sea oil and gas fields, 11 industry analysts and bankers said. UK oil and gas M&A involving a UK target or buyer reached $19.6 billion year to date, compared with $16.5 billion for all of 2025, making 2026 the strongest year for activity since at least 2022.
2. Taxes and costs
The Energy Profits Levy has pushed the headline tax rate on UK upstream oil and gas activities to 78%. Analysts said ageing fields and high relative costs are adding pressure for mergers, while the pace of deals will depend partly on the outlook for energy prices.
3. BP sale draws interest
BP plans to sell its North Sea oil and gas fields as part of a portfolio overhaul, and analysts estimate the sale could raise $2 billion. The next bidding round is scheduled for December; possible buyers named by Cavendish include EnQuest, NEO NEXT+ and Ithaca. BP CEO Meg O'Neill said she was pleased with the level of interest in the assets.
