Union Pacific posted second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $3.41 and revenue of $6.86 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $3.24 and $6.71 billion, respectively, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Shares rise after earnings beat
Shares of U.S. rail equipment supplier Union Pacific UNP.N rose 5.8% to $309.91 after the company beat second-quarter results on higher freight rates and strong demand.
The stock hit an all-time high of $315.99 earlier in the session.
Market performance and analyst view
Eighteen out of 27 brokerages rate the stock "buy" or higher and nine rate it "hold"; the median price target is $313, according to LSEG data.
Including the session's move, the stock has risen 34.7% year to date, compared with an 8.5% increase in the S&P 500 SPX.
