UPS Completes $100M RFID Sensor Rollout Cutting Misloads 70% Across US Network

UPSUPS

UPS has completed second-phase deployment of RFID package sensing technology across its US network, equipping over 5,500 UPS Store locations and all delivery vehicles with sensors following a $100 million investment. The system has cut misloads by nearly 70% and will extend tagging to sortation hubs and aircraft.

1. Deployment of RFID Sensors

UPS completed the second-phase rollout of RFID package sensing across its small–package network, installing sensors in all US delivery vehicles, delivery stations and more than 5,500 UPS Store locations. By end-2025, label-printing technology was deployed to every UPS Store, ensuring every package is tagged for automated tracking.

2. Operational Impact and Efficiency Gains

The RFID system has eliminated the need for 20 million manual scans per day and reduced misloads by almost 70%, boosting productivity and delivering real-time visibility on package movement. This shift from handheld scans to automated sensing minimizes sorting errors and delivers faster, more reliable tracking updates for shippers.

3. Future Expansion Plans

Part of the Network of the Future initiative, UPS will begin equipping regional sortation hubs and, eventually, aircraft with RFID sensors later this year. The company has invested over $100 million to develop and implement this technology, positioning itself as the first major logistics provider with an integrated, network-wide sensing solution.
