UPS Plans UK Driver Outsourcing Cutting 3,000 Jobs, Invests $48M in 27 Healthcare Facilities
UPS•UPS will eliminate over 3,000 UK frontline delivery jobs by June 2027, shrinking its UK workforce from 4,000 to 800 as it shifts to contractor fleets and gig workers. Separately, UPS is investing $48 million to upgrade 27 temperature-controlled facilities for healthcare logistics across domestic and international networks.
1. UK Outsourcing Strategy
UPS will transition its UK parcel deliveries from employee drivers to independent contractors by June 2027, reducing the workforce at 51 sites from 4,000 to 800. The new model relies on third-party couriers managing vehicle fleets and self-employed gig workers selecting assignments via an app.
2. Union Response and Labor Risks
Unite and two smaller unions are consulting with UPS on the changes, while Unite threatens industrial action over the elimination of more than 3,000 jobs. The move follows U.S. Teamsters’ allegations that UPS is diverting deliveries to a gig-based subsidiary, raising concerns about replicating the UK model stateside.
3. Healthcare Logistics Investment
UPS is committing $48 million to upgrade 27 temperature-controlled facilities across its domestic and international network to support growing healthcare logistics demand. The investment aims to enhance temperature-sensitive shipment capacity and quality across medical and pharmaceutical supply chains.
