US anti-trans ballot wins pose challenge for Democrats ahead of 2028
SPY•Voters in Washington, Colorado, Arizona and Nebraska approved measures restricting transgender rights, including bans on transgender children playing on teams matching their gender identity or on gender-affirming surgeries for minors. The results may keep transgender issues a political challenge for Democrats heading into the 2028 presidential race.
1. Four states approve measures
Voters in Washington, Colorado, Arizona and Nebraska approved ballot measures restricting transgender rights in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The measures prohibit transgender children from playing on sports teams matching their gender identity or ban gender-affirming surgeries for minors.
2. Democrats face a messaging challenge
The measures passed even as Democrats won nationwide and retook control of Congress. Strategists said Democrats still need a message that appeals to a broad public, while critics warned that moving toward Republican positions could alienate LGBTQ voters and the party’s progressive wing.
3. Poll and other results
A Reuters/Ipsos poll in April found 67% of respondents supported banning transgender people from competing in female school sports, including 92% of Republicans and 44% of Democrats. Two other ballot measures on transgender issues were defeated, including proposals in Washington and Missouri.
