U.S. bank profits climb 12% in second quarter as loan growth climbs: FDIC
XLF•FDIC reports higher second-quarter bank profits
The U.S. banking sector recorded $90.1 billion in profits in the second quarter of 2026, climbing 12% from the prior quarter, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reported Tuesday.
The profit growth was driven by higher noninterest income, securities gains, and lower provision expenses at banks, the FDIC said. The agency also reported that the rate of nonaccrual and past-due loans fell in the second quarter, and loan growth rose 6.8% from a year prior.
