US data buoys dollar as Fed hike expectations nudged higher

The greenback had stumbled late last week after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Treasury would double the size of quarterly repurchases of longer-dated bonds, sparking concerns that a shift to a more direct strategy to mitigate the rise in borrowing costs could lead to a debasement of the dollar.
Barclays analysts said in a note on Tuesday that their month-end rebalancing model indicates a moderate dollar selling signal against all major currencies by month-end.
The Canadian dollar CAD= weakened 0.24% versus the greenback to C$1.387 per dollar, reversing slight gains from the prior day after Ottawa placed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. annual imports and rolled out aid for businesses and workers after trade talks with the U.S. collapsed over the weekend.
The Japanese yen JPY= weakened 0.13% against the greenback to 159.37 per dollar. Sterling GBP= weakened 0.41% to $1.3593 and was on track for its biggest daily drop since July 23.
