US EIA says U.S.-Canada energy trade fell, but gas and power trade increased

Aug. 5 (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA):

• Says the value of natural gas and electricity trade between the U.S. and Canada increased in 2025, driven mainly by higher natgas prices and increased trade volumes.
• Says the volume of U.S. natgas imports from Canada averaged 8.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2025, up 1% from a year earlier, while the value of those imports rose 52%.
• Says U.S. natgas exports to Canada increased 4% to 2.8 Bcf/d, with the value of exports rising 77% to $2.6 billion.
• Says electricity trade between the countries totaled $3.2 billion in 2025, with imports from Canada accounting for 67% of the total value.
• Says the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission line has the potential to increase U.S. electricity imports from Canada going forward.
• Says Canada's energy exports to the U.S. were subject to a 10% tariff as of March 2025, although more recent U.S. tariff actions exempt energy trade.
• Says the overall value of energy trade between the two countries fell 11% to an estimated $137 billion in 2025.
