US generated less ethanol blending credits in September, EPA says
USO•The US generated 1.19 billion ethanol blending credits in September, down from 1.29 billion in August. Biodiesel credits rose to 788 million from 716 million.
1. September credit generation
The US generated 1.19 billion ethanol (D6) blending credits in September, down from 1.29 billion in August, according to Environmental Protection Agency data. Biodiesel (D4) credits rose to 788 million from 716 million.
2. How the credits work
Renewable Identification Numbers, or RINs, are used by refiners to comply with the Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires renewable fuels such as ethanol and bio-based diesel to be blended into the fuel supply. Each gallon of biofuel produced generates RINs, and refiners that do not generate enough credits must buy them on the open market.
