U.S. generated more ethanol blending credits in July, EPA says
XLE•EPA data show July credit generation rose for ethanol and fell for biodiesel
NEW YORK, Aug. 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. generated 1.29 billion ethanol (D6) blending credits in July, up from about 1.28 billion in June, according to Environmental Protection Agency data released on Thursday.
Biodiesel blending credits (D4) fell to 796 million, from 841 million in June, the data showed.
The credits, or Renewable Identification Numbers, are used by oil refiners and importers to show compliance under the Renewable Fuel Standard, a law that requires refiners to blend prescribed volumes of ethanol and biodiesel into the fuel supply.
Every gallon of biofuel produced generates RINs. Those that cannot generate their own credits buy them in the open market. Prices for D4 and D6 credits have hit record highs in recent months after the EPA set its most ambitious biofuel blending targets for 2026 in late March.
The following is a table of the credit generation for July by credit type:
| Fuel (D) code | RINs | Volume (Gal.) |
|---|---|---|
| D3 | 14,159,419 | 14,159,419 |
| D4 | 795,504,411 | 486,609,600 |
| D5 | 22,910,907 | 15,672,806 |
| D6 | 1,289,072,455 | 1,289,072,455 |
