US grants Aurora exemption for self-driving trucks safety feature
AUR•The U.S. Transportation Department approved a five-year exemption allowing Aurora and other self-driving trucking companies to use cab-mounted warning beacons instead of having drivers place warning devices around stopped trucks.
1. Five-year exemption approved
The U.S. Transportation Department approved a five-year exemption for Aurora and other autonomous trucking companies from rules requiring drivers to place warning devices around a stopped truck. The companies may use warning beacons mounted on the truck cab, the department said.
2. Earlier waiver request
In 2023, Waymo and Aurora jointly sought a waiver from rules requiring reflective triangles outside stopped trucks to help prevent crashes. The decision is a step forward in efforts to broadly deploy commercial self-driving trucks in the United States.
