US House Democratic Women's Caucus presses health secretary on estrogen patch shortages

Kennedy Jr. and FDA Acting Commissioner Kyle Diamantas for a timeline to stabilize estrogen patch supplies and for the FDA to consider adding the patches to its shortage list. The FDA said earlier this month it was working with all six manufacturers to increase supply.
1. Lawmakers seek answers
The Democratic Women's Caucus sent a letter Monday evening seeking details on the prolonged supply disruption, including manufacturing or supply-chain bottlenecks, which brands and dosages are most affected, and whether the FDA is considering additional manufacturers. Lawmakers said a July notification to the FDA had brought no meaningful action.
2. Supply disruption
Women have reportedly faced difficulty obtaining the patches, prompting some to reduce or switch estrogen dosages or change brands or types of therapy. The patches deliver estrogen through the skin and are used to ease menopause symptoms including mood swings, hot flashes and sleep disturbances.
3. Calls for attention
Representative Val Hoyle said the issue reflects a lack of priority for women's health. She said she wants health officials to address lawmakers' concerns before Congress returns on November 9 and warned that members would work to highlight the problem if they do not receive an answer.
