Commerce Imposes 160%+ Duties on Chinese Battery Graphite, Boosting Domestic Producers
The U.S. Department of Commerce set antidumping duties of 93.5% and 102.72% plus countervailing duties of 66.82–66.86% on Chinese anode materials, raising total tariffs to at least 160%. The measures, pending a U.S. International Trade Commission decision in March 2026, boost Novonix’s competitive position as it scales synthetic graphite production.
1. Duty Ruling Details
The U.S. Department of Commerce finalized antidumping duties of 93.5% on specified Chinese anode material exporters and 102.72% China-wide, plus countervailing duties of 66.82–66.86% on all Chinese imports. Combined with existing 25% Section 301 and 20% IEEPA tariffs, total charges will exceed 160%.
2. Impact on Novonix’s Competitive Position
Novonix’s Tennessee-based synthetic graphite facilities stand to benefit from reduced competition as Chinese imports face the elevated duties. Management expects these measures to accelerate investment in U.S. manufacturing, reinforce supply chain resilience, and support advanced manufacturing job creation.
3. Next Steps and Timeline
The U.S. International Trade Commission will issue its final material impediment determination in March 2026, after which the duties will be enforced and reviewed every five years unless revoked. Novonix is advancing its plant expansions and customer agreements in anticipation of shifting demand toward domestically produced anode materials.
