US, Iran set to hold separate talks with mediators on Monday or Tuesday, official says
USO•Qatari mediators are likely to hold separate talks with Iran and the US on Monday or Tuesday in New York, focusing on an amended version of Iran’s seven-day proposal to end the war.
1. Talks expected in New York
Qatari mediators are likely to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and separately with the US side on Monday or Tuesday, an official briefed on the negotiations said. Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency later confirmed Araqchi would meet the mediators on Monday morning, New York time.
2. Proposal terms and responses
Iran’s seven-day plan calls for ending hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, unfreezing billions of dollars in Iranian assets, ending sanctions on Iranian oil and lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports. It would then allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen and resume talks on Iran’s nuclear program. US President Donald Trump said Saturday he had rejected Iran’s proposal, but told Axios on Sunday he expected US negotiators to engage in further talks this week. Araqchi said Iran had not received a formal US rejection and was awaiting Washington’s definitive position.
