US legal sector job growth climbs as broader economy sees gains
SPY•The US legal sector added 2,400 jobs in October, reaching 1,251,200, while the broader economy added 165,000 jobs and unemployment fell to 4.1%.
1. Legal employment rises
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 1,251,200 legal sector jobs in October, up 2,400 from September and 7.4% from five years earlier. The bureau revised September’s job count downward, but its data shows continued sector growth since March.
2. Broader job gains
The US economy added 165,000 jobs last month, exceeding economists’ expectations, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%. The finance sector added 9,000 jobs, though it has shed 126,000 since peaking in May 2025.
3. Law firm changes
The employment gains come as Weil, Gotshal & Manges, a 1,200-lawyer firm, plans to wind down and dissolve after partner departures and an unsuccessful search for a merger partner. Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is in talks to bring on around 120 Weil lawyers in the United States and London; other partners have moved to Goodwin Procter and Quinn Emanuel.
