US refiners cut gasoline yields to maximize diesel, jet fuel production, EIA says
XLE•US refiners reduced gasoline yields and increased distillate and jet fuel production in 2026, the EIA said. Gasoline yields averaged below 45% from January through August, while jet fuel yields reached at least 12% from March through August.
1. Refinery output mix
Motor gasoline yields averaged below 45% from January through August 2026, remaining below the five-year low in every month despite high gasoline prices, EIA data showed. Distillate fuel oil yields topped five-year averages throughout 2026, while jet fuel yields reached at least 12% from March through August. Gasoline, distillate fuel oil and jet fuel together account for roughly 85% to 90% of US refiners’ petroleum product output.
