1. Rent growth slows
U.S. retail asking rent growth slowed to 1.6% in the third quarter of 2026, its weakest pace since 2017. Growth fell from 2.3% in the previous quarter and 2.9% a year earlier, despite a second consecutive quarter of solid demand. Elevated operating costs increased tenants’ resistance to rent increases, and every major retail format recorded slower annual growth; general retail properties posted roughly 1% growth.
