US states take steps to curb diesel and gasoline prices
USO•States are using tax suspensions, temporary rule changes and other measures to curb fuel costs. Diesel reached a record $6.53 a gallon a week ago, AAA data showed.
1. States waive taxes and rules
Several states have suspended or reduced gasoline and diesel taxes. Georgia suspended both taxes for 30 days, while Ohio suspended them for 90 days; Indiana suspended its gasoline sales tax, and Kentucky cut its gasoline tax by 10 cents.
2. Fuel and transport measures
Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma and other states eased restrictions on using red-dyed diesel in highway vehicles. California suspended its seasonal summer-blend gasoline requirement, while Michigan allowed sales of winter-blend gasoline and E15 through the summer. Some states also eased vehicle weight limits or waived rules for fuel haulers.
