US will rescind policy targeting oil and gas industry methane leaks
XLE•The US Environmental Protection Agency said it would soon propose scrapping a Biden-era rule targeting large methane leaks from oil and gas operations. The agency said the proposal would save $45 billion a year.
1. EPA plans to scrap rule
The EPA said it would soon propose rescinding its “super emitter” program, which requires companies to respond when third parties report suspected methane leaks using remote sensing. The Trump administration had delayed implementation until next year.
2. Reactions to the proposal
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the rule imposed unnecessary burdens on energy producers. The Sierra Club criticized the move, with campaign director Mahyar Sorour calling it a giveaway to fossil fuel executives.
