Vance says Iran must cut enrichment to end war
USO•Vice President JD Vance said Iran must make a meaningful reduction in its nuclear enrichment capacity to meet US demands and end the seven-month war. The conflict has a $3 billion monthly price tag and has jolted global energy markets.
1. Enrichment demand
Vance said any agreement would require Iran to reduce its nuclear enrichment capacity, rather than offer assurances of future cuts. “We're not going to trade words for actions,” he said. The US and Iran have exchanged proposals aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
2. Negotiations and costs
Vance said the US was in talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, but Washington was uncertain how much authority they held. He said the war costs $3 billion a month and that Iranian troops can periodically strike commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, but are largely unable to prevent energy exports through the waterway.
