Verizon Unveils Digital Twin Tech and 2,600-Asset Satellite Fleet for Hurricane Response

VZVZ

Verizon deployed a Digital Twin system using AI and drone-captured 3D imagery to pinpoint storm damage instantly, reducing tower climbs and expediting repairs. It expanded its satellite assets to 2,600 and introduced Multi-Orbit Off-Road vehicles toggling between GEO and LEO for flexible backhaul and 5G hotspots in disaster zones.

1. Digital Twin Technology Accelerates Damage Assessment

Verizon’s Digital Twin system uses drone-captured 3D imagery and AI algorithms to compare pre- and post-storm models, instantly identifying damage to antennas, cables, and cell sites. This virtual inspection process reduces tower climbs, prioritizes equipment staging, and speeds network restoration while enhancing engineer safety.

2. Multi-Orbit Satellite Fleet Expansion

The company increased its satellite assets to 2,600, including mobile deployable cell sites and permanent links, and rolled out the Multi-Orbit Off-Road vehicle capable of toggling between GEO and LEO satellites. These assets ensure continuous backhaul when fiber and power fail, plus localized 5G hotspots for first responders.

3. Specialist Teams and Year-Round Preparedness

Verizon’s Frontline Crisis Response, MERIT gas-detecting drones, and the V Team Disaster Response Corps partner with relief organizations to provide on-site support. Nearly 3,000 mobile assets, backup generators, and staging across the country underpin a resilient network built for rapid hurricane recovery.
