Verizon’s $1B Contract Activation Triggered by AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 6 Success
AST SpaceMobile’s successful LEO deployment of the BlueBird 6 satellite validates its Block 2 telecom architecture and enables activation of Verizon’s commercial agreement, part of over $1 billion in carrier contracts. This milestone shifts the focus from technical risk to network rollout, paving way for direct-to-device broadband nationwide.
1. BlueBird 6 Deployment and Technical Validation
The BlueBird 6 satellite deployed into Low Earth Orbit features a 2,400 sq ft communications array and beamforming capability that enables signals to reach standard smartphones. Its Block 2 architecture supports peak data speeds up to 120 Mbps, demonstrating true broadband voice, video and data transmission and retiring the primary engineering risk.
2. Verizon’s Commercial Agreement Activation
With technical validation complete, Verizon’s commercial agreement—one of several carrier contracts exceeding $1 billion in total commitments—can now be activated for nationwide coverage. This includes a 10-year stc Group prepayment of $175 million and similar arrangements with AT&T, solidifying a clear path to recurring revenue.
3. Funding and Deployment Outlook
AST SpaceMobile holds $3.2 billion in liquidity and is ramping its Midland, Texas facility to produce six satellites per month. The next satellite, BlueBird 7, is slated for late-February launch on New Glenn, advancing the target of 45–60 satellites in 2026 required to deliver continuous service in the US, Europe and Japan.
