Viasat Enters Boeing Evaluation for AERA Terminal on 737 MAX, 777X, 787

VSATVSAT

Viasat has begun Boeing’s technical evaluation to qualify its next-generation AERA ESA terminal for installation on 737 MAX, 777X and 787 aircraft as a selectable linefit option for airlines. The lightweight, solid-state antenna promises multi-orbit connectivity, reduced maintenance and gate-to-gate Wi-Fi performance when certified.

1. Technical Evaluation with Boeing

Viasat has initiated Boeing’s formal technical evaluation of the AERA electronically steered antenna for compatibility with Boeing’s Aerodynamic Shroud fairing on 737 MAX, 777X and 787 platforms. This step is required before AERA can become an OEM linefit offering.

2. AERA Antenna Features and Benefits

The next-generation AERA terminal delivers simultaneous multi-orbit connectivity for consistent gate-to-gate Wi-Fi, a lightweight solid-state design that reduces drag and maintenance, and built-in redundancies for enhanced reliability and lower operational costs.

3. Certification and Market Entry Timeline

Viasat aims to complete certification and launch AERA in early 2028, after which airlines can select the terminal as part of their new aircraft configurations or retrofit existing fleets without structural modifications.

4. Strategic Implications for Viasat

Linefit approval could unlock recurring hardware and service revenue streams, strengthen Viasat’s position against competitors in in-flight connectivity, and support long-term customer relationships through software-based feature upgrades.
