VIAVI and DOCOMO Achieve 20% Throughput Gain in AI-Driven 6G RAN Demo
NTT DOCOMO and VIAVI Solutions demonstrated AI-driven RAN control for 6G mobile networks, achieving up to 20% throughput improvement by reducing control overhead. The trial used VIAVI’s digital twin and AI RSG simulator to optimize beam selection across multiple base stations in a Tokyo Station-area model.
1. Demonstration Results
NTT DOCOMO and VIAVI Solutions conducted a joint study showcasing AI-driven RAN control for next-generation 6G, achieving up to 20% higher system throughput by slashing control messaging. The evaluation simulated multiple base stations around Tokyo Station, optimizing beam selection from eight candidates per UE with fewer network quality reports.
2. Technical Implementation
The trial leveraged VIAVI’s TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator and a digital twin environment to predict network quality and select optimal transmission beams. By using location data and radio propagation characteristics, AI enabled real-time adaptation and reduced the need for conventional UE measurements.
3. Future Development Plans
Both companies plan to advance research on AI-driven network control and digital twin technologies for 6G applications. Further studies will explore scalability, integration into live networks, and full-spectrum AI for real-world diverse radio environments.
4. Company Profiles
VIAVI Solutions leads in test, monitoring, and assurance for critical networks, while DOCOMO is Japan’s top mobile operator with over 91 million subscribers and expertise in 3G to 5G technologies. Their collaboration targets the realization of efficient, AI-powered 6G networks.
