Loudoun County Data Center Emissions Could Trigger $100 Billion in Annual Health Damages

AMZNAMZN

A Virginia data center in Loudoun County using 51 diesel generators and eight gas turbines could cause 3.4–6.5 premature deaths annually and accrue nearly $100 billion in health damages per year, rising to $3 billion by year 30. Amazon’s AWS operations there may face heightened emissions regulations and increased compliance costs.

1. Study Finds High PM2.5 Emissions and Health Costs

A recent analysis of a Vantage data center in Loudoun County found that emissions from 51 diesel generators and eight natural gas turbines could lead to 3.4–6.5 premature deaths per year, climbing to 33 over five years and nearly 200 over 30 years. Annual health-related damages are estimated at almost $100 billion, with costs rising to $3 billion by year 30, driven by increased rates of asthma, heart attacks and strokes.

2. Amazon’s AWS Exposure to Local Data Centers

Amazon is among the major cloud providers using Loudoun County facilities, which serve as a critical hub for AWS. Any new emissions standards or penalties targeting PM2.5 output could directly increase operating expenses or force capital investments in cleaner backup power systems for Amazon’s regional infrastructure.

3. Potential Regulatory Impact

Regulators may tighten particulate limits or impose stricter permitting requirements in response to projected health risks, raising compliance costs for operators in “Data Center Alley.” Industry stakeholders now face the prospect of additional air quality controls, possible fines and public pressure to accelerate the transition to lower-emission backup power solutions.
