Visa Acquires Prisma and Newpay to Capture Argentina’s Domestic Transactions

Visa has completed the acquisition of Argentina’s Prisma Medios de Pago S.A.U. and Newpay S.A.U., integrating their payment platforms into its global network and securing access to domestic transaction volumes. This deal follows a blocked bid in Mexico and comes as U.S. and U.K. regulators intensify scrutiny of merchant fees.

1. Argentina Acquisitions Completed

Visa finalized the purchases of Prisma Medios de Pago S.A.U. and Newpay S.A.U. in Argentina, adding a diverse suite of local payment products and services to its portfolio. The deal allows Visa to integrate these platforms with its global processing network and support next-generation solutions, including tokenization and advanced risk management tools.

2. Enhanced Regional Capabilities

By bringing Prisma and Newpay under its umbrella, Visa gains direct access to Argentina’s domestic transaction volumes and can now offer higher-value services to local issuers and merchants. This expansion is expected to accelerate rollout of biometric verification, agentic commerce innovations and other value-added services.

3. Regulatory and Competitive Landscape

The acquisitions come shortly after Visa’s bid to acquire a stake in Mexico’s Prosa was blocked by antitrust authorities, underscoring the regulatory challenges in Latin America. Simultaneously, U.S. and U.K. regulators are examining interchange and merchant fee practices, potentially capping rates and reshaping competitive dynamics.

4. Stock Performance and Valuation

Visa’s shares have declined 12.2% over the past year, underperforming the S&P 500 and trading at a forward P/E of 23.6x versus the industry average of 18.4x. Consensus estimates forecast 11.9% earnings growth in fiscal 2026 and 13.3% in the following year.
