Visa has embedded its payment network into ChatGPT, allowing users to link cards so AI agents can autonomously shop and complete transactions at any merchant accepting Visa. The integration uses tokenized credentials, real-time authorization, spending caps and merchant restrictions to manage fraud and user controls.
Visa and OpenAI have launched a collaboration to embed Visa’s global payment network directly into ChatGPT, enabling AI agents to browse, select and purchase items on behalf of users at any merchant that accepts Visa cards. Users link their Visa cards to the chatbot, after which OpenAI’s agents handle product search, evaluation and checkout initiation while Visa processes payment authorization at scale.
To protect cardholders, the integration employs tokenized credentials and real-time authorization, ensuring that each transaction is authenticated and monitored for fraud. Users can define spending limits, restrict transactions to approved merchant categories and require explicit approval for purchases above set thresholds.
This move revives AI-driven commerce after OpenAI retired its Instant Checkout service and positions Visa at the forefront of AI-enabled payments, potentially expanding its addressable transaction volume. Rival network Mastercard is developing similar AI payment tools, making this partnership a key differentiator for Visa’s growth strategy.
