Volkswagen partners with NXP on chips for software-defined vehicles
Volkswagen will use NXP Semiconductors’ S32K5 microcontrollers in a future software-defined vehicle architecture developed by RV Tech, its joint venture with Rivian. The first vehicle featuring the architecture is planned for 2027.
1. Future vehicle architecture
Volkswagen entered a strategic partnership with NXP Semiconductors to use its S32K5 microcontrollers in a future software-defined vehicle architecture. Developed by RV Tech, the joint venture with Rivian, the architecture is intended for vehicles from both automakers across brands and segments. The first vehicle featuring it is planned for 2027.
2. Fewer control units
Common microcontrollers are intended to consolidate vehicle functions into fewer electronic control units, reducing hardware complexity and supporting scalable deployment.
