Volkswagen plans to globalise China-developed technology
Volkswagen plans to use China-developed vehicle technology in overseas markets, with the rollout of its next-generation models beginning in South America by the end of the decade. It also unveiled VEGA, a package with 850-volt fast charging and Level 3 autonomous-driving readiness, slated for a 2027 launch.
1. Technology for overseas markets
Volkswagen said its Compact Main Platform with China Electronic Architecture, developed in Hefei with Chinese partners, will feature in next-generation models for Global South markets. The rollout will begin in South America by the end of the decade, and the company plans to ship more China-built Volkswagen and Jetta cars to South America and Africa in the coming years.
2. A shift in China strategy
The move shifts Volkswagen from its “In China, for China” strategy toward using China as a development and export base. The company has identified Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa as potential destinations for China-developed models, while ruling out Europe and North America for now. Volkswagen China chief Ralf Brandstatter expects China’s passenger-car market to shrink by 20% this year, or about 4.5 million vehicles.
3. New technology package
Volkswagen also unveiled VEGA, a package featuring 850-volt fast charging and Level 3 autonomous-driving readiness, slated for a 2027 launch.
