Volkswagen reportedly considers using Chinese software for Europe
Volkswagen is reportedly considering using software developed for its Chinese-market cars across about three quarters of next-generation models from its VW, Skoda and Cupra brands in Europe.
1. Software proposal
Volkswagen could use its China Electronic Architecture, developed for Chinese models with Xpeng, as the basis for future cars from its core VW, Skoda and Cupra brands, a media report said. Core brand chief Thomas Schaefer is expected to present the proposal to management on Tuesday.
2. Rivian partnership
Volkswagen has kept its Chinese-market software architecture separate from technology being developed for Western markets with Rivian. The company invested $5.8 billion in Rivian, a partnership at the heart of CEO Oliver Blume’s software strategy. Volkswagen declined to comment on the report.
3. Software challenges
Volkswagen has struggled to keep pace on software. Its complex range of models, from mass-market brands to Audi and Porsche, has posed difficulties for scaling, including at in-house unit Cariad.
