Walmart Expands 30-Minute Delivery to 33 Cities, Challenging Amazon
AMZN•Walmart has launched its 30-minute delivery service in 33 U.S. cities and reports that 26% of its Express Deliveries already arrive within this timeframe. This move follows Amazon’s recent expansion of similar rapid delivery services to dozens more cities, intensifying competition in the urgent ecommerce segment.
1. Walmart Broadens 30-Minute Delivery Reach
Walmart on May 28 expanded its 30-minute-or-less delivery service to 33 U.S. cities, offering more than 100,000 eligible items from groceries to electronics. During the first quarter, the retailer completed millions of sub-30-minute deliveries to over 19,000 zip codes, with 26% of Express orders meeting the timeframe.
2. Amazon Accelerates Rapid Delivery Rollout
Amazon recently extended its own 30-minute delivery service to dozens more cities and has set plans to add additional markets by year-end. The retailer’s push mirrors Walmart’s strategy to capture growing demand for urgent online orders.
3. Intensifying Urgent Delivery Competition
The rising demand for immediate deliveries is creating a new competitive battleground, placing pressure on logistics networks and delivery economics. Retailers lacking comparable speed risk losing urgent orders and ceding market share to rivals offering faster fulfillment.
